GENIUS Program

Developing the Biotechnology Leaders of Tomorrow

Accepting applications for September 2025, Metro Prep’s GENIUS Program is Toronto’s first high school biotechnology curriculum. This program provides students with hands-on experience using advanced technologies such as DNA sequencing, PCR, and genetic engineering. Through expert-led lessons and practical lab work, students will gain the skills needed to succeed in post-secondary education and careers in biotechnology, genetics, medicine, and related fields.

Program Highlights

MetroPrep’s hands-on Biotechnology program helps students gain skills in high-demand fields like genetics, medicine and environmental science, setting them apart in university admissions.

GENIUS Program Courses

The GENIUS Program integrates theoretical learning with practical lab work, helping students understand the real-world applications of biotechnology. The curriculum is structured as follows:
Introduction to Biotechnology (Grade 9/10)

Course Code: SNC3O (customized)

Course Description

This course introduces students to the rapidly growing field of biotechnology and its impact on healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. Students explore DNA structure, gene manipulation, and the ethical considerations of genetic engineering. Through hands-on projects and simulations, they gain foundational skills in molecular biology and biotechnology.

Key Topics

  • Foundations of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering
  • DNA Structure and Function
  • Gene Editing Technologies (e.g., CRISPR)
  • Ethics in Biotechnology

Course Code: SNC3U (customized)

Course Description

This course provides a deeper exploration into the principles of genetics and molecular biology with an emphasis on biotechnological applications. Students investigate how genes control traits, explore modern techniques such as DNA sequencing, and study real-world uses of genetics in fields like medicine and agriculture. Hands-on labs allow students to apply genetic concepts in practical settings.

Key Topics

  • Mendelian Genetics and Inheritance Patterns
  • Molecular Genetics: DNA Replication and Transcription
  • DNA Sequencing and Applications in Medicine
  • Bioinformatics and Genetic Data Analysis

Course Code: SBI4U (customized)

Course Description

In this advanced course, students explore the latest innovations in biotechnology and their ethical, societal, and environmental implications. Topics include gene therapy, cloning, and the production of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Students engage in critical discussions and complete advanced laboratory exercises and research projects.

Key Topics

  • Biotechnology in Medicine (Gene Therapy and Vaccines)
  • Genetically Modified Organisms in Agriculture
  • Cloning and Stem Cell Research
  • Ethical Considerations in Biotechnology

Course Code: IDC4U (Interdisciplinary Studies)

Course Description

This capstone project allows students to apply the knowledge gained throughout the GENIUS Program to a real-world biotechnology challenge. Working individually or in teams, students design, execute, and present a project that addresses a specific problem in the biotechnology field. Mentorship from biotechnology professors and industry experts guides students through the process.

Key Topics

  • Project Design and Research Proposal
  • Data Collection and Analysis
  • Presentation of Findings to Peers and Industry Experts
